I joined the Lumsden & Carroll commercial build team in August 2008, having previously worked for Laing O’Rourke as a trainee quantity surveyor.
Lumsden & Carroll was attractive to me as a trainee in order to gain experience on a wider spectrum of projects with shorter programmes, rather than prolonged multi-million pound schemes. I was to be given a more involved & responsible role by joining Lumsden & Carroll which was an attractive proposition.
Lumsden & Carroll sponsored me through my part-time degree course at Northumbria University; a BSc (Hons.) degree in Building Project Management. This process was a challenging one, however having the balance between work experience & theory was extremely beneficial.
In addition to this I won the CECA Most Promising Civil Engineer Award 2010 and CECA Trainee of the Year Award 2010 whilst also being nominated for the CENE Student of the Year Award in 2011.
I am a site based staff member, working under an experienced Project Manager. My projects have been varied in terms of size and detail, ranging from a specialist day-care centre, a large hospital extension and restoration works to a 147 year old listed building. My day to day duties are centred around site supervision, health and safety, site waste management, detailed record keeping, plant and material requisitions, planning and organising and much more.
Every day presents a new challenge and managing many trades in order to complete a project on time and on budget is a test that not many other professions offer.
